Calling all College students!…If you’ve always loved to watch the 5-time winner of Outstanding Reality Competition, “The Amazing Race”, now is your chance to participate in this similar competition – The Penang Inter-Collegiate Heritage Challenge. Participants shall be required to complete the required tasks at designated heritage stops. Find your competitive edge while completing Detours (which the teams must complete together) and Roadblocks (which only one member of the team can perform) along the way as you appreciate the many colorful customs and cultures in Penang.

Hurry and register yourselves now, only limited to 50 teams and to be held at Upper Penang Road on 15 May from 7.30AM. Hence, this will build closer rapport among colleges and establish new friendships and connections as well as strengthening the relationships. Through the participation, teams get to learn and identify new discovery, be spontaneous in their wanderings, and in many cases, learn about the heritage sites which has been listed by UNESCO. This competition enhances your sense of involvement in a dynamic community, brought to you by KDU College BA in International Hotel and Tourism students. More importantly, you’re given a unique opportunity to “craft” experiences with chances to win.

80% of Malaysians Are Not Designed For Running

Yes, you heard it....80%

If you are thinking of putting on those running shoes for a jog around the park this afternoon, think again.

Eighty per cent of Malaysians are not “designed” for running due to a variety of conditions such as bone structure, said Malaysian Physiotherapy Association (MPA) president Dr Balwant Singh Bains.

Thus, many students get injured when they take part in school sports which usually involve running and cross-country activities, he said.

He said that he was not against running but stressed that it was important to be screened by a physiotherapist before starting an exercise regime.

“For adults, jogging is the first thing that comes to mind when a doctor recommends exercise,” he said, adding that ageing could leave weak points in our bodies.

“A physiotherapist can recommend a suitable training regime which will not affect the weak areas,” he said.

Alternatives include swimming, cycling and other low impact activities such as step exercises, Dr Balwant added.

2nd Penang Bridge 24% Completed, Will We Have Another Marathon?

Will we have another marathon or will the venue of the PBIM be changed here once it is completed in 2013? We'll have to wait and see...

The construction of the RM4.3bil second Penang bridge is now 24% completed compared with about 7% in October last year.

Last October, in a visit to the bridge site, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said the bridge completion had to be delayed by a year to 2013 due to re-designing works.

The 17km bridge will link Batu Kawan to Batu Maung on Penang island and will be the longest in the region when completed.

Recommended Stay for Outstation Runners - Cititel Express KL

If you're wondering where to stay for the upcoming SCKL, I would highly recommend the Cititel Express. Part of the CHM hotel groups which include Cititel and Boulevard Mid Valley, this hotel is mostly catered for the budget traveller. With all the basic amenities available, this hotel rates highly in my list for runs in the KL city. I've stayed here thrice last year for the GE 30k, SCKL and Padang Merbok 15k events, and I've never been dissapointed.

It's only a 15 minute walk to the Dataran Merdeka a 5 minute taxi ride to the Lake Gardens. There is ample parking space at the underground car park via a small alley. If you want to wander into the city, the Chow Kit monorail station is just a stone's throw away. At a rate of RM88 for the twin sharing standard room, you couldn't bargain for more. The rooms is so spacious that you could practically do warm ups. The toilet is specially constructed with double locking mechanism so you could still take a bath while your partner is doing his business. Furthermore there is a safety box in the room for you to keep your valuables to ensure peace of mind while your focus on achieving your PB.

All the requirements for runners in the express way.

KWYP Penang Hill Climb Route

This year's event will be held on 4th July. Forms still not out yet but this is one of the events I've been waiting for. To put it to words, this route is really a KILLER. To me its one of the toughest and yet you need to push yourself to the limit. With no less than 1,000kcal burnt for every workout, I will try to make it a fixture every Sunday.

The most difficult parts being close to 46 and just after the 84 point. We can see from the map that the elevation level is up to a 20% gradient. I'm not sure how some people could run on these slopes but I'll be out of breath on a walking pace. The route that I plotted out is not 100% accurate but based on my closest estimate. I believe it would be longer, around 8km+. Distance from starting point in Youth Park to the foot of the hill would be around 3km. If I could better my record and do below 1 hour, I'd be a very happy man.

It's the final week for the early bird discount for the registration of Penang Bridge International Marathon. I had just registered for the half marathon after much hesitation. I hadn't been training LD for quite some time now after coming down with the knee injury. Believe it or not, my last LD race was the SCKL 2009. So I had to set a target for myself to complete the 21k, hopefully within an improved timing.

ECP McDonald's to Changi Village, 18km of Ideal Running Track

View Interactive Map on MapMyFitness.com

Got this information from Kazuo from his frequent excursions to Singapore. At the East Coast Park, there is an 18km track extending from McDonald's to Changi Village ideal for running, cycling and many other activities. The two-lane track is quite wide, there is no congestion and traffic to worry about. See how far behind we are as compared to Singapore?

There was hype that Penang was going to build 3 cycling tracks back in Nov 2009, but I haven't heard anything since then. The three tracks proposed were from Teluk Bahang to Georgetown, Batu Maung to Georgetown via Jelutong Expressway and a heritage trail within Georgetown itself. How I wish that it would not be another ATNA (All Talk No Action).

Drinking Beer is Beneficial to Runners

I guess there is no harm in drinking beer moderately, especially after a hard day's training.

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy," said Benjamin Franklin – and who are we to argue with such an august figure?
The problem most runners have, though, is reconciling sinking a couple of cold ones with the consequential effect on their training. However, although we all know the dangers of drinking too much, moderate beer drinking may be better for us than we think.

Here comes the science bit...

Great Team Spirit at PAAA's Annual Round the House Relay

It was a carnival-like atmosphere at Padang Polo yesterday with supporters turning up in huge massess supporting their beloved team. It was my first-time entering a relay event and I'm quite happy that our team "ADK Runners" was placed 9th in the Men's Open and finished in a time of 1:31:09.

Not able to find many runners, we formed a team of runners from our usual running friends of all ages. We were fortunate to find the minimum required 8 runners. We all trained by ourselves and there were not even a single practice session together. Even then, our running spirit was high and everybody bettered their personal best on that day. We were rewarded with a nice-looking finisher's medal and certificate for our effort.

Looking forward to the next relay run together. Hopefully the year end Round the Island Relay.

Read on for photos and full results.

Training Route: 1.14km Around PISA Carpark

I tried this route yesterday in preparation for this weekend's relay race. Two loops is 2.28km and I extended my run slightly to meet the 2.58km on the actual race course. It's a really flat course and very similar conditions to the RTH relay route minus the busy traffic. Many runners are also making this their training ground. Other pros are ample parking space and toilet facilities available. Try it!

56 Teams Lined Up for PAAA Round the House Relay 2010

Round the House Relay is just this weekend. There are a total of 56 teams entered in all catagories. I submitted my team "ADK Runners" under the Men's Open category. We're just joining this event for the fun of it and to gain exposure. I've never run relays before amd this would be a good experience to learn.

Judging from the team line up and last year's results, I'd be happy if our team didn't come in last. Haha. It's incredible how these people could finish 2.5km in less than 10 minutes. Well, let's see how we fair on Sunday. Good luck to all.

Watch out for BM Leopard, O2 Hiking Team and Penang Forward Sports Club. They are the favourites to win.

Challenging but Rewarding Run at Pantai Kerachut

I was told that it has been 3 years since this run was last held. Instead of starting from the small roundabout at Teluk Bahang, the starting point changed to the entrance of the national park this time. The turn out was average, considering there was no entry fee. Only about 200+ participants made the long journey to the very end of Penang Island.

The run started exactly on time at 8am. The first 300m stretch was a flat road leading to the jungle trail. It was another ~2.5km of negotiating tree roots and difficult terrain before we reach the mid-way check point at Pantai Kerachut. I hiked but never ran this Kerachut trail before and I was wrong to underestimate its severity. I had to resign to a walking pace at certain areas as I had pushed myself to the limit. Upon reaching the mid-way check point, we had to complete a quiz by identifying the correct animal in a multiple choice answer. A 30 second penalty will be imposed and added to your finishing time for every wrong answer. Ha! This is something unique and adds more challenge to this run. As you can see from the results, the first person to finish was demoted to third as he was awarded a 90sec penalty. Refreshments were provided in the form of a water bottle and it is compulsory for us to carry it all the way to the finish line as this was a conservation run.

Thanks to pm1 for this. Great event with scenic views. Participated last year but not this year unfortunately. The Grand Kampar Hotel is recommended if you're taking part in this. Spacious and comfortable rooms and you may relax at the pool before and after your run. But it will take around 45 mins drive to reach the starting point at Bidor, so start your journey early.
