A UNITY run to foster racial harmony as well as promote tourist spots in the Bayan Lepas constituency will be held on April 5.
Organising committee chairman Syed Amerrudin Syed Ahmad said the 8km 'Unity Fun Run' will cut through padi fields, villages, hilly terrains and beaches near Jalan Kampung Mesjid in Teluk Kumbar to help promote the obscure and potential tourism spots in the area.
Jointly organised by the Bayan Lepas Community Sports Club (BLCSC) and Penang Amateur Athletics Association (PAAA), the run will give participants a good chance to win the grand prize of a Honda Cup worth RM2,000 and lucky draws.
"This is an annual event with different routes chosen each year," said Syed Amerrudin.
"We expect to register participants from Kuala Lumpur, Malacca as well as from the northern states. Apart from promoting sports, this event will help highlight the rural outbacks as potential tourism spots and encourage domestic tourism," he said.
The run, he said, is open to all Malaysians and foreigners aged above 13 years.
The event will be divided into seven categories: Men Open, Junior Veteran Men, Senior Veteran Men, Women Open, Veteran Women, Junior Men below 17 and Junior Women Below 17.
There will also be four special categories: hotel, bank, Free Trade Zone and school.
